Alfalfa and Increasing Breast Milk Supply

Saya pernah cerita tentang alfalfa dalam post ni.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is a common plant from the pea family and is one of the oldest and most cultivated crops in history. References to alfalfa date back to early Roman, Greek and Chinese cultures. It is believed to have played an important role in these and other early civilizations.

Alfalfa has been used a food and a medicinal herb for centuries. It is believed to treat digestive disorders, arthritis and kidney problems. It is a main source of food for livestock including horses, goats and dairy cows, and is also considered to be a galactagogue, helping to increase the breast milk supply for nursing mothers.

Health Benefits and Uses of Alfalfa

Alfalfa is highly nutritious. It contains many vitamins and minerals and it's rich in antioxidants. It is low in saturated fat and cholesterol and a good source of protein and fiber.

It is a primary source of food for dairy animals so it is an important part of the production of milk, cheese, ice cream and other dairy products.

It is used by breastfeeding mothers to make more breast milk.

It has been used to stimulate digestion.

It is believed to decrease inflammation in the body.

It has been used to treat high blood pressure.

It is thought to regulate blood sugar levels.

It may lower cholesterol.

It has been used as a diuretic.

Chlorophyll found in Alfalfa is believed to clean, heal and detoxify the blood.
Alfalfa and Breastfeeding

Alfalfa has a long history of use in women's health. It has been consumed by nursing mothers for many years to help with the production of breast milk. When taken in moderation, alfalfa is considered safe and nutritious.

If you choose to add alfalfa to your diet during pregnancy, it should be stopped a few weeks before the birth of your baby to help prevent an overabundant milk supply.

Alfalfa does enter the breast milk and is safe for the baby, however, too much alfalfa can cause you or your baby to develop diarrhea. This can be prevented by introducing alfalfa into your diet gradually.
How to Take Alfalfa

Alfalfa is available as a food, a tea and in tablet or capsule form. Talk to your doctor of lactation consultant about adding alfalfa to your diet.

As a Food: The best way to benefit from alfalfa is by adding it to your diet naturally. Alfalfa sprouts or seeds have a pea-like taste and can be added to salads, soups or other foods.

As a Tea: Unlike the sprouts, the alfalfa leaf is bitter so it is usually dried and prepared as a tea. Use 1 or 2 teaspoons of dried alfalfa leaves per cup (8 oz) of boiling water.

Tablets or Capsules: You can typically start with one tablet or capsule 4 times a day, gradually increasing the amount up to 8 per day. Your doctor or lactation consultant will instruct you on the dose that is best for you.

Alfalfa can be used in combination with fenugreek, blessed thistle, nettles, fennel, goat's rueor other galactagogues to help increase the supply of breast milk.
Warnings and Side Effects:

Alfalfa is generally safe if taken in moderation, however, it is an herb that has been used as a medication for many years. Medications and herbs can have side effects and potentially dangerous drug interactions. Always discuss the use of herbal supplements with your doctor and your baby's doctor.

Side effects of alfalfa tend to be mild. Diarrhea could occur in you or your baby if you begin taking a high dose of alfalfa too quickly. To prevent gastric problems, start with a low dose and slowly work your way up to the higher dose.

If you tend to have an overabundant milk supply, alfalfa could further increase your supply leading to engorgement and mastitis.

Alfalfa, like other green leafy vegetables, contains vitamin K which can interfere with anticoagulant medication.

Alfalfa can trigger auto-immune disorders or make them worse. Do not use alfalfa if you suffer from Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) or another auto-immune condition.
In Conclusion

Alfalfa is a common and nutritious herb that is believed to be safe when used in moderation. Packed with vitamins and minerals, it's a healthy addition to your diet as long as you don't overdo it.

Back to Normal!

Alhamdulillah... Susu dh back to normal. 

Last week merudum sbb 2 minggu berturut2 gi meeting kat luar. Masalah bukan sbb mtg kat luar, tapi disebabkan jadual mesyuarat yg terlalu packed. Free time hanya waktu lunch je. Itu pun berkejaran dengan waktu makan dan solat. Fuhh...

So bila dpt pump sekali je sehari, susu pun berkuranganlah disebabkan demand yang terlalu sedikit. Huhuhu...

Kesannya? Bekalan utk hari esoknya terpaksa diambil dari stok, dan tidak digantikan. Kesan keduanya, stok pun turut menyusut! T_T

So bermula dari hari sabtu, saya start ops perah! Hehee.. Biasanye hari sabtu ahad mmg dh x pump, direct feeding je. Bila dh jadi camni, terpaksa laa... Demi anak :D Waktu malam, ngantuk2 pun pump jugak.. Sbb tunggu semua anak2 tido, br dpt pump dgn senang hati....

Hari isnin bila pump kat ofis dpt sikit je. 2 botol je hari tu. Selasa up sikit dpt 2 setengah botol. Dan hari ni, sesi pagi je dpt 2 full bottle. InsyaAllah by petang blh dapat 3-4 botol... Caiyok2 =D

Bayi Enggan Menyusu, Ibu Frust!!

Pernah tak anda mengalami baby taknak menyusu... bila diletakkan pada pada breast, baby mengamuk, berpaling kiri dan kanan.... nampak mcm tak selesa...

dan anda frust, tertanya-tanya kenapa ni baby???

Kenapa ia terjadi?

Berikut adalah antara kemungkinan-kemungkinan kenapa terjadi macam tu:
  • Baby tidak sihat
  • Baby letih
  • Baby tidak merasa lapar
  • Baby kurang bertenaga
  • Baby keliru puting
  • Baby pernah mengalami ketidakselesaan sewaktu hari2 pertama penyusuan
  • Baby kenyang disebabkan telah disusukan dengan susu formula, air kosong atau minuman lain 
  • Baby hendak tumbuh gigi
  • Baby mempunyai thrush atau seriawan dalam mulut (sesetengah orang panggil ulcer mulut)
  • Bau badan ibu berbeza daripada biasa (mungkin disebabkan oleh minyak wangi  atau menggunakan nipple cream)
  • Sesetengah ibu mengatakan bayi mereka enggan menyusu sehari sebelum ibu datang haid (mungkin menyebabkan perubahan rasa terhadap susu ibu)
Bagaimana mengatasinya?

Kadang kala ibu hanya perlu BERSABAR. Hentikan dulu untuk seketika. Selesakan bayi terlebih dahulu. Mungkin dia panas dan tak selesa. Check lampin. Kalau basah, tukarkan. Dukung bayi, seboleh-bolehnya skin-to-skin, supaya bayi dapat disusukan terus bila dia menunjukkan keinginan untuk menyusu, dan supaya bayi belajar untuk selesa dengan breast ibu.

Jika bayi keliru puting (apabila bayi disusukan susu perahan melalui botol, normally selepas ibu kembali bekerja, atau sebab2 lain), cuba tukar puting botol. Pilih puting yang imitate nipple ibu supaya bayi tidak merasa perbezaan yang ketara antara penyusuan botol dan direct feeding. Atau cara lain, beri bayi susu melalui sudu atau cawan kecil apabila bayi perlu diberi susu perahan.

Bagi bayi yang lebih besar, mungkin bayi merasa kenyang yang lebih lama apabila telah mula mengambil solid food. Tunggu sehingga baby betul2 lapar barulah disusukan.

Pengalaman saya

Faiq (anak ke-3) pernah enggan menyusu sewaktu berumur lebih kurang 6-7 bulan. Sebabnya? Saya tukarkan puting dia dari saiz S kepada saiz M. Perbezaan puting saiz S dan saiz M ialah lubang puting saiz M lebih besar. Jadi susu keluar lebih laju. Saya tukarkan puting tersebut sebab mengikut panduan, saiz S untuk newborn sehingga 6 bulan. Saiz M untuk 6-12 bulan. Masa tu saya beli puting jenama Medela.Balik dari kerja, bila baby lapar memang saya bagi direct feeding. Tapi baby tak mau. Puas saya cuba susukan dia tapi dia tetap meronta2 macam frustrated dan tak puas.

So saya tanya kawan saya yang supply puting tu (she's a medela product supplier - u can reach her at http://www.mybreastpumpshop.com) and dia bagitau yes probably because of the size of puting botol tu. Rupa-rupanya untuk bayi yang menyusu dengan perahan susu ibu, tak perlu ikut saiz tu! Sebabnya, susu ibu lebih halus dan bila tukar ke saiz M, susu keluar lebih laju berbanding direct feeding. Bila baby dah biasa dengan kelajuan susu daripada botol, tu yang dia dah tak nak breast. Bukan saya nak kata direct feeding ni lambat keluar susu, tak... but compared dengan penyusuan botol menggunakan puting saiz M, yes the baby can tell the difference.....

So apa yang saya buat ialah saya tukar balik ke puting botol saiz S..... and guess what, all is back to normal! huhuhu... memang pengajaran untuk saya.. jangan suka2 tukar puting susu selagi baby takde masalah dengan puting tu....

Tips Nutrisi untuk Ibu Yang Menyusukan Anak

Assalamualaikum all beautiful mommies out there...

Tahukah anda, seorang ibu yang menyusukan anak memerlukan 200 lebih kalori berbanding sewaktu dia hamil? Betul... tenaga yang diperlukan oleh ibu yang menyusukan anak lebih banyak daripada membawa anak dalam kandungan... sebab tu kebanyakan ibu yang menyusukan anak akan berasa cepat lapar... tapi jangan risau. Penyusuan susu ibu juga dapat menjadikan ibu dapat menurunkan berat badan tanpa perlu bekerja keras... hanya menyusukan anaknya secara ekslusif!

Protein Needs

While breastfeeding you should eat two to three servings of protein each day. A serving is equal to 3 to 4 ounces of meat, fish or poultry. Good sources of protein include:
  • Meat
  • Poultry
  • Seafood
  • Eggs
  • Cheese
  • Milk and yogurt
  • Cottage cheese
  • Tofu
  • Dried beans
A note about seafood: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that nursing mothers not eat shark, swordfish, king mackerel or tilefish because of their high mercury content.


Calcium Needs

The suggested daily intake of calcium for breastfeeding mothers is 1,300 milligrams per day. Reading nutrition labels can help ensure that you are getting enough calcium. For example, one cup of milk or yogurt contains 300 milligrams of calcium. The best sources of calcium are:

  • Milk
  • Yogurt
  • Hard cheeses
  • Calcium fortified orange juice
  • Calcium fortified tofu

Iron Needs

Iron also is important for breastfeeding mothers. If you are 18 years of age or younger, you should get 10 milligrams of iron per day. For those over 19, the suggested daily intake is 9 milligrams. Good sources of iron include:

  • Meat
  • Poultry
  • Seafood
  • Dried beans
  • Dried fruit
  • Egg yolks
As mentioned above, it is important not to eat shark, swordfish, king mackerel or tilefish because of their high mercury content.

Vitamin C Needs

Nursing mothers need slightly more vitamin C than they did during pregnancy. If you are 18 years of age or younger, you should get 115 milligrams of vitamin C per day. If you are 19 or older, you should get 120 milligrams per day. Good sources of vitamin C include:

  • Citrus fruits
  • Broccoli
  • Cantaloupe
  • Potato
  • Bell pepper
  • Tomato
  • Kiwi
  • Cauliflower
  • Cabbage

Multivitamins

Breastfeeding mothers need to take some sort of daily multivitamin that contains 100 percent of the recommended dietary allowance (RDA). If you wish, you can continue to take your prenatal vitamin or mineral supplement — however, it contains much more iron than needed for breastfeeding. If you have problems with constipation or stomach upset, switch to a general multivitamin that contains 100 percent of the recommended dietary allowance (RDA).

Water Needs

While breastfeeding you should drink at least 8 cups of water each day. Have a glass of water each time you nurse your baby. In addition to water, other good liquids are juice, milk, broths, herb teas and soups.

Exercise and high temperatures will increase your need for liquids. Therefore if you are active or it is warm, make sure you keep hydrated and drink even more water.





So... macam mana ibu-ibu di luar sana? Agak2 cukup tak nutrisi seharian kita ni... bagi saya, memang saya akui ada vitamin2 yang saya termiss every now and then... yelah, dengan kesibukan kerja, menguruskan anak 4 orang.... memang tak terjaga keperluan nutrisi saya ni...

PADAH MINUM ESP (Energizing Soy Protein)

Siapa ckp ESP Shaklee ni xde keburukan.
Saya menghadapi masalah bila minum ESP.

Mcm ni ceritanya.
Pagi td saya x sempat mengepam. Bos pagi2 dh panggil discussion. Then terus sambung meeting. Sampaaaiii la pukul 2 ptg. 
Breast dh engorged dh. Sampai sakit.

Biasanye klu saya x minum ESP x jd camni. Klu miss pump pun xdela bengkak bila tiba pukul 2ptg.
Tapi ni pukul 12 dh start x selesa dah.

Habis je mtg terus gi pump. Kejap je dpt 2 botol penuh.

Tulah dia. Gara-gara ESP.

Alfalfa Penambah Susu Ibu (Milk Booster)





If there's one supplement that i would recommend to all nursing mommies out there, it'll be ALFALFA.



Nak share pengalaman sewaktu saya menyusukan anak ke-4...

Anak ke-4 saya ni lahir pre-mature iaitu sewaktu usia kehamilan saya 35 minggu. Dan semasa pantang dia memang baaaanyaakkkk tidur.. sampaikan saya terpaksa kejutkan dia untuk menyusu. Kalau nak harap dia bangun sendiri tu memang tak menyusu la jawabnye sampai 4-5 jam....

So every 2-3 hours saya kena kejutkan dia. Kadang-kadang dah kejut pun still dia lelap lagi dan tak nak menyusu. Lagi satu, bila dia menyusu pun tak lama, kejap jek dia dah tertidur balik... T_T

Seperti yang kita tahu, susu ibu ni akan terhasil mengikut demand. Semakin banyak dan kerap baby menyusu, makin banyak susu akan terhasil. So bila anak saya yang kuat tidur ni kurang menyusu, milk production pun berkurangan lah....

Masa tu saya memang ambil set berpantang Shaklee tapi tanpa Alfalfa. Masa berpantang pun takde masalah untuk menyusukan baby sebab baby memang 24 jam dengan saya. Tapi time dah start buat stok yang saya sedar susu saya tak berapa banyak... Everytime pump dapat dalam 1-2 oz je... Masa tu risau jugak sebab takut stok tak cukup bila dah masuk kerja balik... So bila dah jadi keadaan macam tu, saya pun try lah ambil ALFALFA. Dan hasilnya ALHAMDULILLAH... memang menggembirakan! ^_^

Dari 1-2 oz, saya mula dapat 3-4 oz setiap kali pam. Oklah tu... sebab saya akan pam selepas saya menyusukan bayi. Biasanya baby saya akan menyusu sebelah je. Lepas tu dia sambung tidur balik... so saya akan pam sebelah lagi untuk buat stok.

Ok, tu cerita masa saya belum masuk bekerja. Bila dah start bekerja semula, biasalah, busy... kadang2 terlupa nak makan supplement. And saya perasan hari2 yang saya tak makan alfalfa, susu saya akan merudum... Bila makan je, up balik....

Untuk ibu-ibu yang mengalami masalah susu badan tak mencukupi, i strongly suggest u to try this milk booster. Of course, penerimaan setiap individu berbeza. Some may feel the effect, some may not. Tak salah mencuba...
